Why We Charge for Our Services
Owner Sonny Waller on why a fair price beats the old pickup-truck scrap run.

My name's Sonny Waller. I own Junk Doctor here in Valdosta, and there's one question I get more than any other: why do you charge for this? If some of what you're hauling still has value, why not just take it for free? I understand why people ask it. Here's the honest answer.
You know the old saying: one person's junk is another person's treasure
It's true, we sometimes pick up things we can turn around and sell. A dresser with some life left in it, a mower that just needs a battery, a stack of good lumber somebody's done with. Not everything that comes off a property is trash. But a junk removal company can't run its pricing on maybe. Some of what we load up sells fast. A lot of it sits for weeks. Plenty of it never sells at all, and that load still costs us a dump fee at the landfill just like everything else on the truck that day.
The old pickup-truck days are gone
The truth is, gone are the days of someone coming around in an old pickup truck, taking only what they want, usually metal, and leaving the rest. Modern junk removal has turned into a real business that takes everything the customer wants gone and disposes of it properly, at a fair price.
There used to be a guy who'd roll through in a beat-up pickup, take whatever had resale value, mostly the metal, and leave the rest sitting right where it was. That's not a service. That's picking through somebody's property for the parts worth money and calling it a favor. Junk Doctor doesn't work that way. When we take a job, we take the whole job. Everything on the list gets loaded, everything gets hauled off, and everything gets disposed of properly, whether there's a dollar in it for us on the back end or not. That's what turned junk hauling into a real business instead of a guy with a truck and good timing.
Where the fee actually goes
Most junk items go to the landfill, which charges a dumping fee. Some items are donated and, if it is okay with the customer, some are kept for resale. Those items may sell quickly or may not sell at all, so a junk removal company cannot depend on resale alone.
The price we give you covers the labor of me or one of my guys carrying a hot tub out through a gate that's tighter than it looked on the phone, the truck and the fuel to get the load there and back, equipment when a job needs more than two backs and a strong grip, and the tipping fee the landfill charges on every load, whether it's packed to the roof or half empty. Some of what we haul gets donated. Some of it, if the customer's fine with it, we hold onto and try to resell. But resale is never a sure thing, so we can't price a job around it happening. The fee pays for the job getting done right and on schedule, whether the truck comes back empty or comes back with a couch somebody else can still use.
Every quote is a real quote, not a guess
Cost depends on how much you've got and how hard it is to get to, so a garage full of boxes is a different job than a hot tub behind a locked side gate at the top of a hill. That's why we look at a job, sometimes in person, before we price it. It's not us padding a number. It's us pricing the actual work in front of us instead of quoting an average that doesn't fit half the jobs we run around Valdosta and South Georgia.
At Junk Doctor, we donate and recycle whenever possible
At Junk Doctor we try to keep as much out of the landfill as a job allows. Scrap metal gets recycled. Furniture and appliances that still have some use in them get donated to a local charity instead of getting crushed along with everything else. Sorting a load that way takes more time than just dumping it all in one pile, but it keeps usable things in use a little longer and it's the right way to run this business.
So no, we're not offering a free ride in exchange for whatever we happen to sell off your property. We're offering a job done completely, priced fairly, by people who show up and finish what they started.
This isn't about squeezing every dollar out of a load
I could run this business the old way. Show up, grab the metal and the good furniture, and leave the rest for the customer to figure out. It would be less work and it would cost me nothing to dispose of, because I'd only be hauling what I could resell. I don't do it that way, and I don't want to. Junk Doctor is locally owned, fully licensed and insured, and we take the whole job whether it's residential, commercial or industrial. That means a customer calling us knows exactly what they're getting: a crew that shows up, clears the property completely, and stands behind the price they were quoted, not one that cherry-picks a yard for whatever's easiest to flip.
If you've ever had somebody quote you a job and then come back asking for more once they're standing in your driveway looking at what's actually there, that's the exact opposite of how we want to run this. A fair price up front, a full job done, and the stuff we can donate or recycle going somewhere useful instead of the landfill. That's the whole business model, and it's why the fee exists.
